Amazing Creatures and Lovely Food

Lets face it...Hobbits do love their food. A normal hobbit day will include at least six hefty meals a day, pipeweed smoking, and some healthy chit chat down at The Green Dragon in Hobbiton Bywater. Some people think the Hobbits ways are dull but the Hobbits steady approach to life and their love for good food proved successful ; in the face of wars, plagues, and evil creatures they have survived relatively undisturbed. Afterlithe ( or the month of June as the Big Folks call it) it's the best time of the year to harvest of the Hobbits favourite crops, strawberries.

Strawberries were cultivated by the Hobbits as early as the First Age. Strawberries are not only delicious but also regarded as an aphrodisiac and soup made of strawberries, porridge and soured cream are traditionally served to newly-weds Hobbits at their wedding breakfast. In the Shire strawberries are sold in straw baskets thus becoming one of the best packaged foods for picnics and other happy gatherings .

STRAWBERRY AND VANILLA DELIGHT

What is needed is some flaky pastry and freshly picked wild strawberries. For the Filling get some fresh milk and fresh eggs from the farm, a cup of sugar,one vanilla pod , half- cup of corn flour, some fresh butter and whipped cream

Bring the milk to the boil on the stove , with a bit of sugar and the vanilla pod split lengthways.Beat eggs and remaining sugar together then add cornflour and a little milk to thin, stir well. Add to milk and boil again, stirring constantly, for 3 about minutes. Beat in whipped cream until fluffy. Wash and slice strawberries in half, add to the custard.

Roll out pastry, cut into 3, about 2mm in thickness. Cook in an oven preheated to 350°F (180°C)for about 35 minutes. Once cooked, remove from oven and put straight to cool down so the pastry does not puff up. Sprinkle with icing sugar and put under a warm grill for a few seconds.Build alternating layers of pastry and custard, until you have three layers of pastry. Decorate with a few strawberries and fresh mint leaves and ENJOY!
