Virtual Middle Earth

Hobbits love to play games. Many video and computer games own a great deal to J.R.R. Tolkien' stories. High Fantasy settings are still loved by many gamers today, however not many games have been adapted and based directly on Middle-earth, (Video Games based on Tolkien's work) nevertheless since the 1980s we have seen a series of titles some more some less successful. Today with the growing popularity of The Lord of the Rings, that story is bound to make its way into other media, including computer and video games.

Currently I am actively playing The Lord of the Rings Online but if someone ask me which is my favourite Tolkien themed video game my answer would be the THE HOBBIT (2003 Vivendi Universal/Sierra) Set in the Middle-earth, The Hobbit is an action adventure game in which you can be Bilbo Baggins, so you will control Bilbo from Bag End, the Shire into the dark and harrowing Mirkwood forest and finally to the Lonely Mountain, in which lies Smaug the dragon. Sent on a journey by Gandalf the wizard along with Thorin and the other dwarfs, Bilbo will acquire items, knowledge, and in the case of a Hobbit, courage to help him complete the quest as he comes face to face with elves, trolls, orcs, spiders, wolves, and more....one of the best games I ever played .

Many Tolkien fans will need to wait however for the video game based on The Hobbit movie now in production. Guillermo del Toro has said that the schedule is too tight to get a video game ready at the same time with such tight release dates. "Planning a video game that revolutionizes all things... the way it should be... We're gonna be involved, we're gonna be participating, but I don't think we're going to create a revolution just yet, or be as involved as I would like to be in creating that." Must be noted that he is very interested in the media of video games. He apparently follows several known games, but likes also less-known games like FLOWER that he compares to poetry. It remains to be seen if he will be able to fill the *new The Hobbit video game with his ideas and concepts.
