Guillermo Del Toro Will Not Direct The Hobbit

Somehow I was expecting this would happen. In recent interviews Guillermo Del Toro struggled to hide his frustration and now he decided he had enough. The One Ring fansite is reporting this morning that Guillermo Del Toro has quit as director of The Hobbit.

"In light of ongoing delays in the setting of a start date for filming "The Hobbit", I am faced with the hardest decision of my life. After nearly two years of living, breathing and designing a world as rich as Tolkien's Middle Earth, I must, with great regret, take leave from helming these wonderful pictures."

MGM and its financial situation is ultimately responsible for Del Toro departure. The uncertainty around filming schedule and financing proved to be too much for Guillermo Del Toro. In thanking Guillermo Del Toro for all his hard work, Peter Jackson confirmed that the producers would meet this week to ensure a smooth transition as they find a new director. Although not unexpected, Del Toro departure is an other blow for our poor Hobbit. Who will replace the talent and vision of Guillermo ? Who has enough passion, talent and experience to do so? Peter Jackson seem like a 'natural' choice to me ....would he? Could he? In my own little way I want to thank Guillermo for all the work he has done so far, I am quite sure then when finally we get to see The Hobbit many of his ideas and visions for Middle-Earth will be there. He is (and will remain) a co-writer for the script Peter Jackson confirmed.

Maybe gone...but not forgotten! Muchas Gracias Guillermo :)
