Lord Of The Rings Online Goes Free-To-Play

In a surprise move Turbine (which is now owned by Warner Bros.Interactive) and their European partners Codemaster just announced that the very popular MMORPG Lord of the Rings Online will become a Free-to-play game by the end of this year. Currently people pay a subscription to play but soon players will be allowed to download the game for free and then purchase expansions, quest packs, items, and account services from the new LOTRO Store, or join the VIP program to get unlimited access to all of the game’s content for one low price. Being a regular Lord of the Rings Online player myself leaves me with mixed feeling about this change in the way the game will be run. One of the unique traits of this virtual Middle-Earth is the very special community of mature and Tolkien's lore-wise players and there are fears this could disappear as free-to-play will inevitably means a large influx of people that never even considered playing the game before. Players interested in getting a sneak peek of the new Lord of the Rings Online can sign up for a chance to participate in the Beta program (game trials) which begins June 16, 2010 by visiting www.lotro.com ...and yes before you ask, the funny hobbit with the silly hat in the picture is me....I just love my new hat :)
